Armed with dry peas, empty yogurt pots and an endless supply of polystyrene, Farmer creates sanity questioning beats, accompanied by Lash's endless efforts to veer left of every known note or chord."

"The main reason i came to the gig was to see the Traw trio play in a quartet with Oxford double bassist Dom Lash. For those not aware Traw are laptop trio originating from Cardiff but now spread all over the place that still manage to play together a few times a year despite one of their number now living in Paris. Lash had never before played with Traw, and as the set began this was clear, as the first five minutes or so saw the musicians tentatively seek common ground. An opening made up of an almost featureless ambience from the laptoppers made it hard for Lash to find a way in, settling for textural scrapes over the electronic backdrop, but soon after things opened up nicely. One or more of the Traw players began to use samples of Lash's own playing taken from his myspace site, something he wasn't expecting but this pulled him into the performance, and the last twenty minutes or so was very nice indeed. Dom is a highly skilled improvisor, splitting his time between playing in more traditional improv settings and more recently in more "EAI" settings, bringing a sensitivity and responsive ear to the music. Here his touch was sublime, despite him being troubled by a painful back injury, blending a series of dry textures and softly bowed grainy notes into the swirling collage of sounds springing from the laptops, but also not afraid to add the odd jarring sound as counterpoint to the electronics. Highly enjoyable."

"Welsh laptop improvisers Traw put on a rather more novel and entertaining performance. Dominic Lash of Oxford Improvisers is at the forefront with his double bass, scratching and rattling away while the three Welshmen get to work live-sampling him. The upshot is a succulent radiation from the Port's PA, disorientating and feeding the imagination, which flies off in all directions when one's eyes remain closed. Brilliant."

"It's not often that you get a chance to see three of the most exciting new bands in British jazz on one bill, so it came as no surprise two nights ago when an exuberant audience packed into the sold out Vortex jazz club in London. Opening the night were the explorative free-jazz group Gannets.
A definite emphasis on humour prevented their riotous sound from taking itself too seriously, a lot like the Art Ensemble of Chicago after a hefty shot of adrenalin. Their extended collective improvisations were high in energy but were also able to maintain focus through an intelligent use of dynamic shifts.
By juxtaposing dense periods of free creativeness with subtler instrumental tinkering, the texture of the performance was both eclectic and refreshing."

"The Convergence Quartet, American cornettist/flugelhorn player Taylor Ho Bynum, Canadian drummer Harris Eisenstadt, UK pianist Alex Hawkins and Oxford Improvisers' bassist Dominic Lash (7),
operate in the fertile hinterland between structure (they hint at rhythmically regular playing via the use of sketchy 'heads', and concluded their first set with a Monk tune) and free improvisation. Eisenstadt, like, say, Jim Black or Tom Rainey, proved as adept at
providing relatively heavy, almost rock-type beats as in skittering and shuffling behind free playing. Hawkins (who provided stage commentary as well as compositions) operated inside the piano as tellingly as on the keyboard (where he exploits the percussive potential
of the instrument to great effect as well as playing dazzlingly fleet runs punctuated by high-note splashes and bass-note rumbles). Lash held the band sound together with his steadiness, occasionally erupting into blistering solo statements. Ho Bynum ran through the entire
range of his instruments' tonal possibilities, using smears, lip-smacks, high-note squeals, plus the odd run to spearhead a band approach that clearly riveted the attention of a decent-sized audience."

"The door creaks open, and it's like sneaking into a seance. The last time we covered the upstairs scene of this hardcore improvising hang-out, Fizzle's atmosphere was far more outgoing. Tonight, it's near silent in here. Candles are fluttering on the few inhabited tables. Some of the shadowy figures in the select gathering are just about recognisable. Oh, and there's a band playing, though you might not have noticed that at first.
This is minimalism to the maximum. The night's opening act is Hadaly (what does that mean, anyone?), a trio from Oxford. Maybe they should have been headliners, as this date was launching their six-part Jazz Services tour. Maybe they did expect to be headliners . . .
It's a long time since I've heard (just about) an outfit that are so beautifully, lovingly quiet, so acoustically pure. I was ready for this near-silence after the previous evening's bass-whumping onslaught of Groove Armada at the Birmingham Academy. All three players are busy stroking their instruments very lightly. Malcolm Atkins bows his violin like he's slicing limes, Dominic Lash feints fingers against barely-taut double bass strings, and David Stent scrabbles guitar in muted John Russell fashion, with a touch of Derek Bailey. Yes, it's hard to avoid citing these two names when you're in the world of improvised acoustic guitar. The trio have a subtle sense of space and texture, a marvellous ability to impose self-restraint. Even when Atkins blows into his harmonium-melodica thing, his throaty wheezes are still transparent.
When the threesome start heightening their activity, it almost spoils the effect, breaking the spell. In a way, I bet they're glad the audience was so small. They could never have captured this stillness in a crowded, glass-clinking room."
