artistic statement

My recent work has focused more and more on the impact of photography on contemporary painting. I am especially interested in David Hockney and Philip Stedman's work concerning the use of early camera obscuras by artists like Carravagio and Vermeer. This has inspired me to construct several basic light projectors both at unversity and in my new studio in Cambridge.

I have just completed a commissioned portrait and I am currently undertaking a new series of paintings. Entitled "Drive by Christmas" these new works are based on a series of photographs of neighbourhood houses taken from a moving car during the Christmas period.

music review

SHO'Nuff

demolicious "A frankly remarkable thingie called '155 Days In The Electronic Hermitage', from Joel in Cambridge. On 'Rain Song', beautifully recorded layers of laptop-treated acoustic sounds that wouldn't sound out of place on Leaf or Clean Cut are mystifyingly blown away halfway through by Joel's 'widdly-weeeooow' guitar playing. When you're used to guitars in electronic music being used as just a bit of texture, this feels faintly outrageous - like the vicar's suddenly got his cock out. 'Highway Song' is similarly odd but great, in a commercially suicidal kind of way."
